PRESS-RELEASE - Presidential Elections in Kazakhstan will be held on April 26, 2015

In a nationwide television address on February 25, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced that an early presidential election in Kazakhstan will be held on April 26, 2015.

President Nazarbayev said that he made the decision "in order to avoid an overlap of presidential and parliamentary elections, both of which are scheduled for 2016, which is unconstitutional". President Nazarbayev added that he had decided to sign a decree on holding the early election after taking into account "our people's interests and their request to me". The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, an influential organization chaired by Nazarbayev, on February 14 proposed that the early election be held this year. The Assembly said that an early election is crucial to "ensure the continuity of the current policy" and to strengthen the country's economy, adding that Nazarbayev needs another term to steer Kazakhstan through the ongoing economic crisis.

Kazakhstan's upper and lower houses of parliament approved the initiative. In the meantime, a poll held in Kazakhstan by DEMOSCOPE, a public opinion monitoring bureau, part of the International Journalism Center MediaNet, shows that most Kazakhstan residents support the idea of early presidential election. According to the bureau's press release, 82 percent of respondents said they would take part in the early presidential elections. Some 57 percent of Kazakhstan residents support the idea of an early presidential election initiated by the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan and see it as the move to stabilize the economic, political and social situation in Kazakhstan amidst unfavorable external factors. According to the poll, 74 percent of respondents will vote for the incumbent president.
